Confused about what happens on test day? This guide walks you through every step — from what to bring, to how the collection works, to how long you'll wait for results and what happens next.
A little preparation goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know before your appointment.
Bring a valid photo ID
A government-issued driver's license, passport, or state ID is required. The collector must confirm your identity before the specimen is collected. No ID, no collection — it's that strict.
List your current prescriptions
If you are taking any prescription medications — even over-the-counter ones — bring a written list including the medication name and dosage. This is for the Medical Review Officer (MRO), not the collector. A legitimate prescription is never grounds for a confirmed positive result. Learn more about MRO review in our FAQ.
Hydrate normally — don't overdo it
There is no benefit to "flushing" your system with excessive water before a drug test. Over-hydrating can actually dilute your specimen and cause it to be rejected or require a re-test. Drink your normal amount of fluids. The collector will observe the collection to ensure integrity — that's how the process works.
Do not take someone else's medication
This should go without saying, but do not use someone else's prescription to "pass" a test or to mask something. Not only does it not work — the lab detects foreign substances and the MRO investigates — it is also a criminal offense in Virginia. Take your own medications as prescribed and nothing else.
Know whether this is a DOT test
If your employer told you this is a DOT-regulated test, there are additional federal requirements (49 CFR Part 40). The collector will use a Federal CCF form and follow a specific protocol. For non-DOT tests, the process is simpler — same collection, less paperwork. DOT vs. Non-DOT: What's the difference?
Drug tests require a urine specimen — you do not need to fast, and you can eat and drink normally before your appointment.
If you have a medical condition that affects the collection process (incontinence, a disability, etc.), contact us before your appointment at (757) 665-0058 and we'll make appropriate arrangements.
Most people are surprised at how quick and straightforward the collection process is. Here's the step-by-step.
Check-in and identity verification
The certified collector will ask to see your government-issued photo ID. For DOT tests, the collector logs your ID details on the Federal CCF form. For non-DOT tests, the same verification happens on company documentation.
Privacy and dignity during collection
The collector provides you with a private collection area. For urine tests, you will be asked to empty your pockets, wash your hands, and provide the specimen in a designated area. The collector waits outside the immediate collection area but is available. You are never observed directly during urination — the collector's role is to ensure the specimen is yours and hasn't been tampered with.
Specimen goes into sealed, tamper-evident packaging
Once you provide the specimen, the collector immediately seals it in a vial and labels it with a unique ID number — not your name. The specimen label is matched to you only through the chain-of-custody form. This prevents mix-ups and tampering. You will be asked to initial or sign the seal to confirm it is yours.
Chain of custody is documented
Chain of custody is the written record of everyone who handles the specimen from collection to lab analysis. The collector records the collection time, your ID info, and transfers the specimen with a signed form. Read our full FAQ on chain of custody. This documentation is what makes results legally defensible — it proves no one tampered with your sample.
Collection is complete — you leave
The actual collection takes 5–10 minutes. Once the form is signed and the specimen is sealed, you're done. There is no waiting period. You can return to work or leave the site immediately after your collection is complete.
Here's how result timelines work and what to expect if your result is non-negative.
If an instant/rapid test was used, the collector reads the results on-site within minutes. Results are reported to whoever ordered the test — your employer or the designated contact. You'll be notified by the testing coordinator.
Specimens sent to the lab are analyzed using GC/MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) — the gold standard for accuracy. Negative results are typically reported within 24–48 hours of lab receipt. Your employer receives the report directly.
An initial non-negative screen is not a confirmed positive. The Medical Review Officer (MRO) — a licensed physician — contacts you directly to review any legitimate medical explanations. If you have a valid prescription or other documented reason, the result is reported as negative. See our full FAQ on non-negative results.
DNA analysis takes longer due to the laboratory process. Court-admissible results typically arrive 3–5 business days after all samples reach the lab. If you need expedited results for a legal deadline, let us know at the time of scheduling.
Results are reported only to the entity that ordered the test — typically your employer or their designated program administrator. Mobile Quick Labs does not share your personal health information. All specimen data is handled in accordance with applicable privacy regulations.
We offer several test types. Your employer or the requesting organization determines which test you receive.

See pricing →Expanded panel including benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, and other substances beyond the standard 5-panel. Lab-confirmed only.
See pricing →Detects drug use over a 90-day window. Less susceptible to masking. Useful when urine tests aren't sufficient. Results are lab-confirmed only.
See pricing →Instant on-site measurement of breath alcohol concentration (BrAC). Used for post-accident, reasonable suspicion, or random testing programs.
See pricing →Court-admissible DNA testing with full chain of custody. All participants must be present with valid photo ID. Results in 3–5 business days.
Learn about DNA testing →Unlike clinic-based testing, we send a certified collector directly to your workplace or appointment location. Here's what that means for you.
No clinic visit required
No driving to a lab, no waiting rooms, no unfamiliar environment. The collector comes to your workplace, job site, or designated location.
Minimal disruption
The collection takes 5–10 minutes per person. We work with your schedule to minimize downtime — you won't lose a full day to testing.
Same-day and next-day availability
Call by 2 PM and we often send a collector the same day. Emergency and after-hours collections are available for urgent situations.
Full chain of custody
Every collection — even a single test — gets complete chain-of-custody documentation. Results are legally defensible for DOT and non-DOT requirements alike.
Our collectors are available to answer any questions before your appointment — we want you to feel comfortable and prepared.
Employer or HR manager? We handle workforce testing programs — single tests and ongoing DOT compliance alike.
